Toyota to End Production of Popular Japanese Models in 2025

Toyota has announced that two of its most affordable and practical models, the Corolla Axio sedan and Corolla Fielder wagon, will cease production in Japan in October 2025. These models have been on the market for over 13 years, serving as budget-friendly favorites for many drivers.

Unique Models for Japan

The Corolla Axio and Fielder were designed specifically for the Japanese market, unlike the globally sold Corolla. Introduced in 2012, these cars gained a loyal following, particularly among fleet buyers who appreciated their affordability and reliability. While Toyota hasn't given a detailed reason for ending production, they did acknowledge the strong customer base for these models and advised interested buyers to check with local dealerships before they disappear.

Design and Updates

Although these models received facelifts in 2015, 2017, and 2022, their overall design remained largely unchanged since their debut. Built on the Toyota B Platform—shared with the Yaris and Vitz—they are smaller than the global Corolla models like the E170/E180 and the current E210, which launched in 2018.

Buyers could choose between gasoline engines or hybrid powertrains, with most models featuring front-wheel drive. There was also a 1.5-liter gasoline version available, which could be equipped with an optional CVT transmission and all-wheel drive.

Pricing and Market Availability

In Japan, the Corolla Axio starts at approximately ¥1,639,600 (about $10,800), while the Corolla Fielder wagon begins around ¥1,786,400 (about $11,800). For comparison, the newer E210 Corolla sedan has a starting price of roughly ¥2,028,600 (around $13,400).

While it’s still uncertain how much longer Toyota will accept orders for the E160 models, reports suggest that there is a significant waiting list in Japan. Outside Japan, these models were available in several markets, including Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Macau, New Zealand, Singapore, and Sri Lanka.
