Las Vegas, Nevada, January 7, 2025 – Toyota Motor Corporation Chairman Akio Toyoda took to the stage at CES 2025, the world's premier technology trade show, to share the latest developments on Woven City, the company's revolutionary urban development project. As the project enters its next phase, Toyota has completed the construction of Phase 1 and is gearing up for its official launch in the fall of 2025.
Woven City is designed to be a "test course for mobility," where innovators, entrepreneurs, and researchers can collaborate to develop and test cutting-edge technologies. The project's human-centered approach aims to enhance the overall quality of life for its residents and visitors, with a focus on sustainability, community engagement, and smart city infrastructure.
Chairman Toyoda described Woven City as a "living laboratory" where the boundaries between transportation and urban planning are blurred. "We want Woven City to be a place where the future of mobility is shaped by those who are passionate about making it better, for people and the planet," he said.
The construction of Phase 1 buildings, which will serve as the initial area for co-creation activities, was completed in October 2024. The Phase 1 area has received Japan's first LEED for Communities Platinum certification, recognizing its environmentally conscious design and commitment to sustainability.
Preparations for the official launch are now underway, with approximately 100 residents, primarily Toyota and WbyT staff and their families, expected to participate in co-creation activities as the first residents. The community will gradually expand to include external inventors and their families, with a total population of around 2,000 in Phase 2 and subsequent phases.
Woven City serves as a test bed for innovations in mobility, energy, and smart infrastructure. Toyota has partnered with leading companies, startups, and research institutions to develop and test solutions that can shape the future of mobility. The inventors who have been confirmed to join Woven City include:
External startups, entrepreneurs, universities, and research institutions will also be invited to Woven City through an accelerator program, starting in summer 2025.
Residents and visitors of Woven City will play a vital role in co-creation activities, contributing to the realization of the city's full potential. They will be known as 'Weavers,' individuals who share a passion for the expansion of mobility and a commitment to building a more flourishing society.
Toyota's transformation into a mobility company is a key aspect of Woven City. The project aims to redefine mobility, expanding its scope beyond transportation to encompass the movement of people, goods, information, and energy. Designed as a human-centered city, Woven City places people at its center to unlock new possibilities in the shared pursuit of "Well-being for All."
As Woven City takes shape, Toyota is also looking to expand mobility to space. The company has announced an investment in Interstellar Technologies Inc. and will leverage Toyota's expertise to support the mass production of rockets. This bold vision marks a new frontier for Toyota and underscores its commitment to shaping the future of mobility.
With its official launch in the fall of 2025, Woven City is set to become a hub for innovation and experimentation, where the boundaries of mobility are pushed and the possibilities for a better tomorrow are explored.
